He married (1) Mary Smith, the widow of Nathanial Swarthout, on December 22, 1807. She was born October 08, 1765, and died November 07, 1824. He married (2) Amy Bet. 1824 - 1827. 9. John W. Swarthout (Lewis B., Johnathon) was born February 28, 1842, and died April 19, 1927 in Buried, Ovid Cemetary. He married (1) Martha J. Stockwell, daughter of Melotha M. Stockwell and Samantha. She was born March 08, 1842, and died October 05, 1869 in Ovid Landing, N.Y.. He married (2) Abbie B. (Swarthout). She was born February 29, 1836, and died October 03, 1905 in Buried Ovid Cemetery.

He enlisted the 22nd of December 1863 with the 148th New York Infantry, Company E, which was comprised mostly of men from Seneca County - Specifically the towns of Ovid, Lodi, Romulus and Covert. His enlistment papers indicate his occupation as farmer of 21 years of age born in Romulus, New York.

The Casualty Sheet from the National Archives, prepared 11/11/1878, as well as the hospital records show he was wounded at the Second Battle of Cold Harbor on June 3rd, 1864. Hospital records list him as blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, 5 ft. 9 1/2 inches. He was admitted to Finley General Hospital on June 8th, 1864 (5 days after the battle). GSW [Gun Shot Wound] right arm above elbow ball entered middle third . . . lodging in body of Bicep. Missile was identified as a Minnie ball. Operated on June 23rd and ball extracted. Discharged on July 4th, 1865 on a Surgeon's Certificate. Pictures of his records and medals.

Was a member of the ROTC at Cornell University in 1918 while he studied Mechanical Engineering. 

He had to leave school to assist his father on the farm, a protected occupation, and worked the farm until he sold it in the 40s. He worked at the Willard Asylum for a period of time as a night orderly, often being the only 'sane' individual in the building he was working in. Worked for Cornell University in the Agricultural research division until retirement in 1966, a total of 16 years, working on corn hybrids.
